]]> Thu Mar 8 2007 MardiGras New Orleans 2007 http://avatar.fotopic.net/c1213530.html Mardi Gras (Tue Fat or Fat Tuesday), is 40 days before Good Fri. It is a catholic tradition and people enjoy days before lent set in from Ash wednesday. I was kind of fascinated with this revelation and was surprised to see the extent at which it was celebrated. For more information check out www.mardigrasneworleans.com or www.mardigrasguide.com. Till now we had been exposed to what all happens on bourbon street, that the media showed repetetively and stressing that to be the essence of Mardi Gras. To me Bourbon street is a place where every body is let loose in free America to express him/herself the way they want to, beads are just an excuse to carry away as souveniers for their free for all act, whatever that may be. The way the buildings are done in French quarters (ironically they are spanish architecture), each with a balcony and the shops on bourbon are all pubs, fastfood, dance bars etc, a recipe for a fun filled night for mena and women alike. Like they say for Las Vegas holds true here as well, What happens in Las Vegas stays in Las Vegas. But I am letting out the photographs. I am posting some pictures of my 1st and only Mardi Gras till date (and I will promise myself to come back) at New Orleans. We (Susheel & fly and Samresh & fly) went there sat and just Samresh with fly and me on Sun. Got loads of beads and thats what the place has to offer. P.S. New Orleans Police and city administration overall did an exemplary job of maintaing law and order and make everyone comfortable to be at a place that had seen devastation couple of years back and coming back to be a city once again. Hats off. The 2 parades we saw had subjects close to my heart : The "Endimion" with theme of Endangered species and on sun Bachchus with theme "World as the child sees it" all animated characters were displayed on 30+ floats. Planned to do both banks but ran out of time so I just stayed on the eastern bank. Got a rainfree day after a long time so headed out on my own for a solitude beside the water. a TTM (Time To Myself). Saw the countryside of Laouisiana on the bank of river Missisipi that is known for marshes, marine farms and sugarcane plantations. Houmas house was built in 1820 and today is a major attraction for its gardens and traditional antiques in the house and offcourse due to its exclusivity wealthy hire it for weddings. The best part is that current owners have retained the traditionality and much of originality of the house. The guided tour is worth the $20 fee and very informative on the lifestyle of people living in 19th century. Highlights: 1. The house is hired for weddings, and to my luck there was one on. 2. The Dogs wedding was attended by 1800 human guests a record with Ripleys and it was covered by Discovey too. 3. The tavern was home to boys who attained puberty and were kept there until they moved out or got marrried. 4. The original owner had income of $ 5 million (in todays value) per year from the sugar plantations. 5. House has separate living rooms for ladies and gents. 6.
